TNC Nature Preserve with extensive Pitch Pine communities on plateau - like mountain top ad basin headwaters.;Charcoal on top of soil. Open stand of larger Pitch Pine with many dead snags. Dense short shrub layer dominated by Huckleberry, with scattered Mountain Laurel and Blueberries. Trees aged by increment cores included 50 - 125 yr old Pitch Pine, 30 - 50 yr old White Pine, 25 - 30 yr old Spruce, 35 - 40 yr old Red Maple.

Taller, bigger, wider spaced trees compared to predominant dwarf Pine forests on plateau. Sampled pre - leaf out - cover and composition of herbs, and deciduous shrubs, but no fire scars on snags. May be biased.
